  • Three nail salons and their owner have agreed to correct and pay up for safety and health and wage violations.
  • This is one of the few times an investigation, and subsequent litigation, involved employee retaliation under both laws, the Department of Labor says.
  • According to the judgement, the salons are required to pay thousands of dollars in compensatory damages, including over $170,000 to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • DOL says a worker, sickened by hand sanitizer, was fired for filing an OSHA complaint.

Asbestos Company Busted

  • A family-based asbestos company has the dubious honor of receiving one of Washington’s biggest fines ever.
  • Seattle Asbestos has been fined over $700,000 by the Department of Labor and Industries for knowingly exposing workers to asbestos.
  • The company, which reportedly specializes in popcorn ceiling removal, is guilty of numerous, repeat violations, L&I says.
  • The company is appealing the fines.
  • Seattle Asbestos was not interested in talking to the media.
