City Being Proactive to Reduce Injuries

 

Arizona workers focus on health  

  • The city of Goodyear, Arizona, has encouraged its employees to perform morning stretching to avoid injuries.
  • Each year, fewer injuries are being reported since the 5-minute team stretching sessions began and Goodyear’s Solid Waste team has dropped from 10 injuries in 2016 down to zero.
  • The Arizona Department of Occupational Safety and Health Administration recognized the city as a Star site in its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) in 2022.
  • VPP is the highest level of recognition a workplace can achieve for safety and health excellence, and Star status is the highest level of recognition within the program.

Worker dead at Michelin plant

  • A man died at the Michelin plant in Lexington, Kentucky.
  • The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and OSHA are investigating the death of Mark S. Lepkowski, 57 of Pelion, who was found pinned between machinery by co-workers at the plant.
  • An autopsy was performed with a preliminary cause of death as compressional asphyxia.
  • The company didn’t offer any details about what led to Lepowski’s death.

Vermont family facility fined

  • The Vermont Department of Children and Families was ordered to pay a fine of nearly $15,000 for a serious workplace safety violation at its St. Albans district office.
  • The Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspected the office and found employees were exposed to the hazard of physical assaults by clients that could exhibit violent behavior during visitations.
  • DCF must pay VOSHA a fine of $14,502 by May 5.
  • VOSHA has also proposed for the DCF office area, for its transport vehicles and for the training that staff members receive.

OSHA introduces training courses

  • OSHA has introduced the 30 Hour construction and the 10 Hour online training course to improve safety.
  • OSHA 30 is a comprehensive safety training course designed to provide complete guidance to employees and employers.
  • The course identifies major hazards, guides about ways to overcome incidents, and information about the employees’ rights and policies.
  • There are also interactive video lessons and safety practice exercises with the courses.
