WHO: Coronavirus death rate higher than previously thought
The World Health Organization said Tuesday the mortality rate for COVID-19 is 3.4 percent globally, higher than previous estimates of about 2 percent. During a press briefing Monday, WHO officials said they don’t know how COVID-19 behaves, saying it’s not like influenza. CNBC
Israel expands traveler quarantine
In Israel, as many as 100,000 people are currently in isolation due to coronavirus concerns. Shipbuilder fined nearly $162K for cited violations at Virginia port
Following the fatal, 20-foot fall of a 58-year-old shipyard supervisor last August as he worked on the USS George Washington aircraft carrier in Newport News, Virginia, his employer received two serious citations and one willful citation and nearly $162,000 in fines from Fed-OSHA. The first citation charges the employee had not been trained to recognize fall hazards in the work area, minimize the hazards and how to properly use fall protection systems and equipment. Employer fined $244K for for fatal fall at Pennsylvania worksite
Fed-OSHA has proposed more than $244,000 in penalties against two companies for a fatal fall in Media, Pennsylvania last year. The employee reportedly fell 20 feet from a residential structure where he was doing framing work, was hospitalized and later died from his injuries. Daily Times (Swarthmore, Pa.)
Former Fed-OSHA employee faked workplace inspections
A former Fed-OSHA employee has been sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay $5,925 restitution for writing 10 workplace inspections reports for checks of Nebraska companies he never performed. They include four in Lincoln at the U.S. Postal Service, Walmart, GlaxoSmithKlein and a construction company. Lincoln Journal Star
