Unintentional Overdoses Up for 10th Straight Year in 2022
- Deaths on the job from unintentional overdoses due to nonmedical use of drugs or alcohol reached 525 in 2022, up 13.1% from 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said.
- The rate, up from 464 in 2021, is the 10th consecutive annual increase.
- Workplace fatalities for workers ages 35 to 44 have more than doubled since 2018, reaching 162 in 2022, up from 117 in 2021.
- The data is collected by BLS’s Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities (IIF) program.

OSHA Investigating Deaths at Delta Atlanta Tech Center
- OSHA has opened an investigation after two Delta Airlines workers were killed and one seriously injured at a facility in Delta’s technical operations center near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
- The accident involved wheel components that were being disassembled for maintenance and were separated from an airplane, Delta said.
- Delta said the cause of the accident has not been released.

Report Calls for NC Farmworkers Heat Protection
- A Wednesday report from the Natural Resources Defense Council and the North Carolina Public Service Workers Union calls for the state to enact a workplace heat standard that explicitly requires essential protections.
- The report cited research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that “conservatively estimates that at least 25 people in North Carolina died from heat-related causes on the job from 1999 to 2017.”
- The report also called for the state legislature to fully fund the North Carolina Department of Labor to ensure it has the necessary resources and staff to keep workers safe.
