OMAHA, NE ‒ The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited national discount retailer Family Dollar Store for safety violations after the company allowed equipment to block an exit route at an Omaha, Nebraska, store. OSHA proposed penalties of $302,147.

OSHA issued four repeat and two serious safety citations after a December 2018 inspection found that the store failed to secure compressed gas cylinders, follow manufacturer’s instructions when using electrical apparatus, ensure emergency exit doors remain unlocked, and cover overhead lights.

“In an emergency, store employees and customers must be able to leave quickly without having to navigate through obstructed exit routes,” said OSHA Area Director Jeff Funke, in Omaha, Nebraska. “These safety hazards need to be corrected to save lives.”

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
