Domestic incident fuels violence at Ohio plant

• OSHA will investigate the workplace shooting at a plant in Dayton, Ohio.
• The shooter and Jeffery James Allen III, who was killed in the incident, were involved in an altercation over a woman.
• A third unidentified man was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
• The shooting at the DMAX Plant was part of a “domestic-related feud,” and experts said employers and those experiencing domestic violence should know how to protect themselves.

Colorado firm faces fines for exposing workers to trench cave-ins

• OSHA determined GoldStar Excavation and Sewer outside Denver was ignoring the federal safety standards that could have prevented a trench collapse in Greeley in 2022 that led to the death of a teenage company employee.
• In that incident, a 17-year-old GoldStar worker suffered fatal injuries after being struck in the head by a large chunk of asphalt.
• A company foreman was injured on Aug. 13 when an unprotected section of the excavation wall caved in on them. The employees were working on a residential sewer connection.
• After an investigation, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a “serious citation” to the Commerce City contractor for violating federal law and proposed $15,625 in penalties.

OSHA announces alliances with shipbuilders

• OSHA and the Shipbuilders Council of America and its associate members renewed an alliance to protect the mid-Atlantic region’s shipbuilding workers from workplace safety and health hazards.
• Originally established as a two-year alliance in July 2021, the renewal extends the joint initiative until 2026.
• The alliance will provide information on occupational safety and health laws and standards, including the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
• It will also promote and encourage the use of OSHA’s On-site Consultation Program, including the Pennsylvania OSHA Consultation Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

OSHA investigating a massive fire in North Carolina

• OSHA is investigating a deadly fire that started in a spray-foam insulation trailer at the construction site in the South Park area of Charlotte, North Carolina that killed at least two people.
• A massive fire broke out at an apartment complex under construction.
• Two other workers are still missing and investigators opened a search to find them,
• Nearby businesses were threatened by the fire’s embers and had to be evacuated and closed.
