Agencies Seek Inputs on Lone Worker Safety

A year after partnering to improve safety and health for lone workers, NIOSH and OSHA are seeking input from employers, lone workers, employers and researchers on the risks of working alone and promising prevention strategies.
In a blog post earlier this week, agencies staffers noted that lone workers range from someone working alone atop power lines, convenience store cashiers, to home healthcare workers who experience violence are at higher risk because no coworker is present to assist them.
They wrote that the OSHA/NIOSH lone worker partnership would like to collaborate with companies, workers, vendors, public health agencies, and other researchers to help answer these questions.

OSHA found no violations in its investigation of an on-set accident during production of Eddie Murphy’s film “The Pickup.”
Production of Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Pickup” starring Murphy and Keke Palmer was previously halted in Atlanta on April 20 after an incident left several crew members injured.
“The purpose of an OSHA inspection is to identify potential safety and/or health hazards in the workplace,” an OSHA spokesperson said in a statement to The Wrap. “OSHA conducted a thorough investigation of Armored Film LLC and the inspection did not result in violations of workplace safety and health regulations. The inspection was closed October 17, 2024.”

A Saskatchewan court last week assessed Canada’s largest workplace fine, after utility SaskPower was found guilty of three workplace safety violations that resulted in the deaths of two experienced employees in 2020.
The court mandated that the fine be paid immediately.
Two employees with 19 years of experience fell to their deaths on Oct. 8, 2020, when the bucket they were in tipped over while they were performing their duties.
The previous biggest fine was assessed in 2017 when Manitoba-based Langenburg Redi-Mix was fined $560,000 for a workplace fatality.
