Migrant workers face danger from firms that bypass OSHA regs
- Immigrant employees sometimes working 10 stories high were not given harnesses or lifelines, as required by OSHA.
- These workers for a cleaning firm complained about the conditions and were allegedly fired by the company.
- The fired employees contacted Laundry Workers Center for help to get their jobs back.
- The company eventually agreed to hold monthly meetings with the workers and promised to look into hiring bilingual supervisors and conduct better training for team managers.
Window washer dies at JFK Library
- A window washer working inside the JFK Library in Dorchester, Mass., fell between five and seven stories to his death.
- The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
- The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Boston police, and District Attorney’s office are investigating the incident.
- Suffolk District Attorney Kevin R. Hayden said the fall appears to be an accident
Cannabis firm fined after employee’s death
- OSHA fined Trulieve, a Holyoke, Mass. cannabis firm, after one of their employees died.
- Lorna McMurrey died of occupational asthma due to exposure to ground cannabis while working at Trulieve Holyoke, according to OSHA.
- OSHA found that employees in flower production were exposed to “occupational quantities of whole and ground cannabis, and … were not trained on the hazards involved in the cannabis grinding and production process.”
- OSHA cited the company for three violations and issued a fine of $35,219.
Association gets money for electrical safety training
- Manufacturers’ Association in York, Pa., was awarded a grant fr0m OSHA to support electrical safety training in central and southcentral Pennsylvania.
- The Federal Susan Harwood Occupational Safety and Health Administration grant is $156,415 and will help workers and employers recognize workplace hazards.
- The training is focused on small businesses and temporarily unemployed workers seeking to enter manufacturing.
- The goal is to provide injury prevention measures and an understanding of rights and responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
