Nevada lawmakers mulling new air quality, heat bill

• A new bill introduced in the Nevada legislature will help outdoor workers have additional safety protections in extreme heat and poor air quality.
• Senate Bill 427, sponsored by Senator Edgar Flores, would require employers to enact tighter health and safety protocols when temperatures exceed 95 degrees and when the air quality index exceeds 200.
• Nevada bill would protect outdoor workers in extreme heat, and wildfire smoke.
• Companies with over 25 employees would have to allow employees 10-minute water and shade breaks hourly in extreme heat and provide proper masks for bad air quality if the bill passes.

Vermont man killed by stone slab

• A man in Vermont was killed after being crushed by a stone slab at his workplace, according to the Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
• The incident happened on Wednesday at Surface Creations of Vermont, a family-owned custom countertop business in Milton.
• Milton police said they believed the slab could have weighed upward of 2,000 lbs.
• Police said the worker was breathing when he was taken to the hospital and was alive when he arrived.

OSHA investigating Myrtle Beach crash

• OSHA launched an investigation after a high-reach excavator crashed into an Ocean Boulevard condominium building in Myrtle Beach.
• Investigators are trying to determine how the machine overturned, crashing into the Boardwalk Beach Resort while working on a construction site.
• SC OSHA looks for any OSHA violations that may have in any way contributed to the incident.
• The Boardwalk Beach Resort was unoccupied at the time of the incident and the plans are for that building to be torn down at a later date.

Investigation into blastomycosis outbreak 

• NIOSH has joined the Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties in an investigation into an outbreak of blastomycosis associated with the Escanaba Billerud Paper Mill in Escanaba, Michigan.
• There have been 19 confirmed cases of blastomycosis, a fungal infection, identified. A confirmed case is a person with symptoms of blastomycosis and where the fungus has either been grown or seen by microscope in a specimen.
• An additional 62 people have been classified as probable cases.
• A probable case is a person with symptoms of blastomycosis and who has a positive antigen or antibody test.
