Robotics Project Seeks to Automate Construction’s Dangerous and Dirty Aspects
- A robotics project at the University of California San Diego’s Existential Robotics Laboratory is aiming to automate the dangerous and dirty aspects of the construction industry, such as lifting heavy objects or welding.
- The group is nearly halfway through the $786,500 project, which runs until the end of August 2027. Part of the funding comes from the Korea Institute for Advanced Technology, a South Korean government research funding initiative, and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, a South Korean research institute.
- The project comes as robots are considered an alternative for accomplishing tasks like laying bricks and for their potential to keep humans away from dangerous jobs.

- Florida utilities contractor Southeast Services of the Treasure Coast could have prevented the June 2024 death of a 24-year-old worker at a Port St. Lucie, Florida, worksite, OSHA said last week.
