Death Was Preventable

• An employee at an automotive supplier didn’t have to die, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
• As a result, the Michigan based company is facing thousands of dollars in fines.
• A worker employed at the Ohio location of Faurecia Emissions Control Systems, was killed while working under a machine that bends exhaust pipes.
• After OSHA was notified of the 2023 incident, an inspection revealed multiple safety violations that led to many citations this month, including the lack of proper training on lock out tag out procedures.

OSHA Tackles Silica

• The Department of Labor has finalized a rule regulating the use of silica dust.
• According the DOL, silica dust has been a hazard for years, especially for miners, who breathed it in on a regular basis.
• A known carcinogen, silica can cause irreversible health issues including black lung disease, according to CDC’s National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
• Going forward mine owners will need to sample dust and do a full evaluation before beginning operations.

Injuries After Porch Collapse

• Two workers were injured in Queens when the front porch of a house collapsed pinning them under a concrete slab.
• They were performing excavation work when the incident occurred. The FDNY showed up to free the trapped workers.
• The workers were transferred to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
• As least one violation has been issued, but an investigation has begun.

• A landscaper working in Florida was hit by a vehicle on a street that was clearly blocked.
• The area was surrounded by traffic cones that the car apparently didn’t notice or ignored.
• The arrow sign directing traffic was unlit, but the Mercedes had a traffic cone stuck to its bumper.

Postal Worker Robbed

• In what police are calling a serious problem, a postal worker was robbed at gun point while delivering mail in Nashua, NH.
• The worker was injured when the assailant took his keys and jumped into a waiting car. The injuries have not been disclosed.
• Police say that robberies of letter carries are a growing concern.
• The thieves can cause injury and trauma in the process of grabbing keys that are used to access mail boxes.
