Enforcement Focus Reduces Hazard Deaths

OSHA said that fewer workers are dying from hazards where it has focused its enforcement resources.
Preliminary agency data showed a decrease in fatalities the agency is required to investigate, including a steep reduction in fatal injuries from trench collapses and falls.
The federal agency said state programs have also seen improvements.
In fiscal year 2024 (September), the federal agency investigated 826 worker deaths, down 11% from 928 in the previous year.
Excluding Covid-related deaths, this is the lowest number of worker fatalities OSHA has been mandated to investigate since FY 2017.

NIOSH said that its research in respirable dust and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) has been instrumental in its development of monitoring solutions now available for implementation at mines.
To minimize the risk of health effects associated with exposure, the Mine Safety and Health Administration released a final rule for reducing miners’ exposure to RCS in April 2024.
One is a monitoring approach called Rapid Quartz Analysis, which mine operators can use to perform their own analyses for respirable quartz exposures at the end of a shift.
Another is a video-assisted exposure monitoring approach, Helmet-CAM, that assesses during a shift, the evolution in time of the exposure of miners to respirable dust concentration while providing useful contextual information.
