Fleet Safety Consensus Standard Revised 

  • The national voluntary consensus standard that defines core elements of a fleet safety program designed to help protect workers on the road has been revised by The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP).
  • The standard   — ANSI/ASSP Z15.1-2024 Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations  — offers guidance to fleet managers and safety professionals for creating written programs and policies.
  • The revised standard strengthens requirements for incident reporting and analysis, and includes modifications that address today’s vehicles, technologies and operating environments.
  • There are 3.5 million fleets in North America that have 32 million commercial vehicles and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of work-related fatalities, according to ASSP.

Wrongful Death Suits Filed in Tennessee Plastic Plant, Houston Refinery Incidents

  • Two separate wrongful death suits have been filed in recent incidents covered here.
  • Tennessee’s Impact Plastics and its CEO, Gerald O’Connor, are named in a suit filed by the family of one of its employees who was killed by catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. 
  • The wrongful death lawsuit claims that plant employees were forced to stay at their posts even when managers knew conditions were increasingly dangerous.
  • Meanwhile, the family of a worker killed after the Pemex Deer Park, Texas hydrogen sulfide leak last Thursday is suing the refinery for wrongful death.
  • According to reports, Houston firm Arnold & Itkin LLP, has filed suit in the death of one contractor and plans to file another lawsuit on behalf of 11 other contractors who were injured due to the gas release at the refinery.
  • Three other contractors have already sued the refinery.

Honeywell, Chevron Collaborate on AI-Assisted Safety Measures

  • Honeywell announced a collaboration with Chevron to develop AI-assisted solutions to enhance refinery operations safety.
  • The two firms seek to enhance operational reliability and cut the number of incidents by integrating AI into Honeywell’s Experion distributed control system (DCS).
  • A key feature is an alarm guidance application that analyzes historical data to help operators make informed decisions to maintain smooth operations.
