Guam Contractor Leads Q2’s Biggest OSHA Fines

Guam-based Giant Construction topped the list of the second quarter’s biggest OSHA penalties, in Construction Dive’s recap of the period’s violators.
As a U.S. territory, Guam is in the jurisdiction of OSHA’s Honolulu-area office.
It racked up $1.04 million in fines, which Giant is contesting, mostly for violations of workers in trenches while lacking safety equipment.

Maryland is set to finalize its heat standard later this month, the first state to do so on the East Coast.
Its proposed regulation was published on July 26, 2024, opening a 30-day notice and comment period. A virtual public hearing will be held on Aug 16.

In 2018, Congress passed the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, which directed NIOSH to develop a registry to study cancer among firefighters.
Writing on the AFL-CIO affiliate’s blog, Capt. Kenny Fent, manager of the Firefighter Health Program at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), highlighted the benefits of registering, outlined differences between the federal registry and various state cancer registries, and eligibility.
