Fatal Equipment Strike at Marine Terminal Prompts OSHA Probe
- A worker at the Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore died Aug. 3 after being struck by a piece of equipment, prompting the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to open an investigation.
- Police have not identified the man, but Jonathan Daniels, executive director of the Maryland Port Administration, confirmed he was a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association.
- MDTA Police are investigating the incident, and a representative of ILA Local 333, which represents Port of Baltimore workers, said the union was not ready to comment as of Aug. 3.
- Department of Labor spokesperson Eric Lucero said OSHA has six months to complete the inquiry and will not release additional information during that time.
Worker Dies After Fall From Railcar at Illinois Soybean Plant
- An employee died Aug. 3 in workplace accident at Incobrasa Industries Ltd.’s soybean processing plant in Gilman, Illinois, after falling from the top of a railcar he was helping load with feed.
- Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said emergency personnel responded around 7:30 a.m. and found the worker already dead at the scene, with no indication his fall was caused by the railcars moving; an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday in McLean County.
- Incobrasa issued a statement saying, “Yesterday we lost a valued member of our team to a tragic accident,” and expressed condolences to Munoz’s family.
- The company said it will cooperate with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on a thorough investigation into the incident’s root cause, with further details to come once that investigation concludes.
