Nevada lastest state to adopt heat prevention program
- Nevada OSHA adopted the National Emphasis Program by initiating inspections for more than 70 high-risk industries for heat.
- Inspections cover indoor and outdoor areas when the National Weather Service has issued a heat warning or advisory.
- The NEP is to remain effective until canceled or modified by a change to the Federal NEP or there is a program launched for a Nevada-specific heat illness regulation.
- Nevada businesses and employees are also invited to participate in a training course on heat-stress safety in the workplace.
Arizona Gov. opposes Biden’s COVID plan
- Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey opposes President Joe Biden’s proposal to slow the delta variant by requiring large employers to mandate COVID-19 vaccines nationwide.
- Biden outlined a federal plan geared to boost COVID-19 protection after the U.S. surpassed 40 million positive cases.
- Biden wants to mandate that all employers with more than 100 workers must require their employees to get vaccinated or receive weekly COVID-19 tests.
- Ducey said that decision “is exactly the kind of big government overreach we have tried so hard to prevent in Arizona.”
Investigation opens after the death of N.J. Amazon worker
- An Amazon employee died at a New Jersey fulfillment center during Prime Day, an annual sales event.
- OSHA has opened an investigation into the incident and details surrounding the worker’s death have not been released.
- Amazon also faces a deeper probe by OSHA into safety conditions at multiple warehouses across the country.
- OSHA representatives inspected Amazon warehouses in the Chicago, New York City, and Orlando areas.
Truckers continue blockade over working conditions in California
- Truckers in California participated in a blockade of the Oakland port over concerns about a labor law that hinders them to work as independent drivers.
- The blockade could increase disruptions brought by other supply chain issues.
- The Oakland port is a major hub for agricultural exports, including almonds, rice and wine.
- Drivers picketed gates and blocked other truckers from hauling cargo in and out of the port.
