NIOSH App Helps Calculate, Prevent Back Injuries

  • NIOSH has updated its lifting equation apps to aid workers and employers by providing an accurate and convenient way of calculating musculoskeletal risk metrics.
  • Available for both iOS and Android phones, the app now includes information icons next to each task variable in the data entry form.
  • These icons provide definitions and explanations to aid the users’ understanding of what each variable represents.

Honeywell Selling PPE Business

  • Honeywell International is selling its personal protective equipment business for $1.3 billion to Protective Industrial Products, a portfolio under private equity firm Odyssey Investment Partners.
  • The pending deal includes Honeywell’s PPE brands such as Fendall, Fibre-Metal, Howard Leight and KCL.
  • The sale is part of the company’s plans to completely exit the protective equipment sector, including the 2021 sale of its protective footwear division to Rocky Brands.

OSHA Completes Emergency Response Standard Hearings, to Reopen Comments

  • Nearly 30 directors from various volunteer fire departments and state organizations testified during OSHA’s virtual public hearings on proposed changes to the Emergency Response Standard, which aims to regulate and harmonize safety protocols across emergency response organizations.
  • Following the conclusion of the hearings, OSHA plans to reopen the standard’s docket for a second public comment period, from Dec. 4 to Jan. 17, allowing individuals and organizations to submit their comments regardless of prior participation.
  • The National Volunteer Fire Council provided written testimony and other resources to help departments prepare their comments. These resources, along with links to testimony, are available on the NVFC website.
