NSC Debuts Opioid Planning Resource

The National Safety Council is offering a free tool to help employers create an opioid overdose response plan.
The Overdose Emergency Planning Tool helps address what the NSC said is a critical gap in workplace safety preparedness” — A response plan that includes having naloxone available onsite.
While drug overdoses make up 10% of workplace deaths, about 72% of employers don’t have an adequate supply of naloxone, NSC said in a statement.
Businesses can input data — such as industry, maximum number of employees onsite per shift, number of floors in the building with active workers and estimated emergency medical services response time.
The tool then generates individualized findings with detailed recommendations.

Consultancy EY said that 78% of companies and government agencies worldwide plan to boost spending on environment, health and safety initiatives in the next three years.
The move is in response to rising workplace injury and mortality rates, according to the firm’s recently released study titled “How does EHS investment drive clear commercial value?”.
Almost 80% of the study’s 526 respondents said their EHS approach has upgraded operational efficiency, including through improved productivity, increased innovation and reduced health-related mishaps, EY said.

Some 2,600 nurses, caregivers and other workers from Temple University Hospital and Temple Women and Families Hospital are preparing for a possible strike when their contracts expire at the end of September over higher wages, better health care benefits, and an increase in workplace safety.
A survey last month found that 67% of nurses reported having personally experienced workplace violence at the main hospital, and 84% said they have witnessed workplace violence.
Workplace violence is so pervasive in the medical field that some nurses or caregivers are assaulted multiple times throughout their career.
