Pie: Half of SMB Work Injuries Preventable

Pie Insurance Finds Small Businesses Could Prevent Most Workplace Injuries

  • Insurtech Pie Insurance said its just-released 2025 State of Workplace Safety Report shows more than three-quarters of small businesses are challenged by workplace injuries, half of which were preventable.
  • More than 30% of small businesses reported over $20,000 on injury-related costs last year. On average, injuries resulted in four lost employee work days and three full business days of disruption during the year.
  • Nearly half (49%) of businesses admitted to improvising safety measures due to a lack of proper equipment.
  • The survey also found that if small businesses could prevent half of workplace injuries, the average annual out of pocket savings — including workers’ compensation, medical expenses, and/or legal costs — could top $10,000
  • Pie’s report drew data from more than 1,000 small business owners and decision-makers.

Tennessee OSHA Says Helene Flood Deaths Not Work Related

  • The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) said Wednesday the deaths of six workers who were swept away by floodwaters from Hurricane Helene in September were not work related because “work operations had stopped and employees had left the building.”
  • “After considering the evidence,” Chris Cannon, a spokesman with the state’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development, said, adding “TOSHA determined that company management exercised reasonable diligence in dismissing employees and providing them sufficient time to leave the facility safely.”
  • A state criminal probe into the deaths is still underway.
