Utility Contractors Set Trench Safety Stand Down
- The National Utility Contractors Association (NCUA) is calling for a Trench Safety Stand Down next week to raise awareness to help prevent injuries and fatalities caused by trench cave-ins.
- In partnership with OSHA and the national industry alliance, Partners for Safe Trenching and Excavation Operations, June 16-20 has been set for programs to teach employees how to reduce exposure to cave-ins, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres and mobile equipment hazards.
- NUCA will provide a Certificate of Participation and helmet stickers to companies.
- The Labor Department ranks trenching and excavating among the most hazardous construction operations.
Indoor Heat Exposure Hitting Service Workers: Research
- Indoor heat exposure is a growing problem for service sector workers, according to a report from a Rutgers University academic.
- Based on data from 3,514 service sector employees across the U.S., researchers found widespread reports of indoor workers feeling overheated and regularly experiencing temperatures exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit, often with little recourse, according to the research done as part of The Shift Project.
- Among workers employed in retail or food service who work indoors, 65% reported feeling uncomfortably hot or overheated at work and 36% reported experiencing uncomfortable heat at work often or always.
- The Harvard-based Shift Project collects and analyzes data on working conditions for the 25 million US workers employed in the service sector.

Employee Appreciation Seen Cutting Workplace Injuries
- Frequent recognition of employees for their efforts and achievements can decrease the likelihood of workplace injuries, according to O.C. Tanner Company.
- The report highlights how feeling unappreciated worsens mental health, which then increases the likelihood of workplace accidents.
- The Salt Lake City-based company’s 2025 Global Culture Report gathered data and insights from 38,075 workers from 27 countries, including 1,208 from France.
- From the French worker data, the report found that recognition could contribute to an almost-50% reduction in injuries.
