Workers have a voice in safety concerns
- Workers, union representatives, and labor organizers from various industries OSHA for the first-of-its-kind summit on workplace safety.
- The so-called Workers’ Voice Summit focused on health and safety problems affecting workers and the need to have a better dialogue to identify workplace problems and find solutions.
- The attendees also discussed the benefits of advancing equity and making the department more accessible to underserved workers and their advocates.
- The workers were able to speak to various officials about the specific safety and health concerns impacting workers in their respective industries and urged officials to consider their concerns in policy-making decisions.
OSHA investigating fires at Amazon facility
- OSHA is investigating two fires at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Huntsville, Alabama, since September.
- A small, isolated fire was reported on Sept. 26, but caused the evacuation of employees.
- Another fire broke out on Oct. 3 after all the employees had returned to work following the previous blaze.
- No one was injured in either fire.
Probe begins over the death of Sam’s Club worker
- A Sam’s Club employee in Pennsylvania died after he was involved in a workplace incident.
- Benjamin Knight Jr., 20, was struck in the head by an overhead loading dock door that reportedly had a broken spring.
- Knight was taken to UPMC Hamot hospital but ultimately died of blunt force trauma.
- OSHA has opened an investigation at the store.
Tree trimmer killed
A tree trimmer died after falling into a chipper in Michigan.
Jesus Contreras-Benitez, a 47-year-old employee of FA Bartlett Tree Expert Company, was dead when officers arrived.
Residents living in the neighborhood told ABC7 News it’s typical to see tree trimming activity across the city. Many streets, including along Peggy Lane, are lined with towering trees.
OSHA is investigating the incident.
