• OSHA said it could take at least six months to investigate the deaths of two employees last week at Marine Hydraulics International’s Norfolk, Virginia facility.
• MHI has announced that they will not provide any further comments while the investigation is underway.
• Described by facility crews as a “freak accident” that doesn’t normally happen.

NIOSH Names Winners of Respirator Fit Challenge

• NIOSH has announced three winners of its Respirator Fit Evaluation Challenge.
• The top prize of $75,000 was awarded to MOBOMO for its “Fit and Breathe” app, which can detect gaps along the face seal of a respirator using an infrared camera.
• OpenAeros came in second, receiving $50,000, for its submission of a low-cost, open-source, quantitative fit tester that pairs a nondestructive sampling probe with an open-source condensation particle counter to calculate a fit measurement.
• In third place, Consequent Labs’s submission for a continuous pressure/temperature sensor that uses machine learning to notify the user of a respirator’s fit condition while being worn, was awarded $25,000.
