U.S. Dept. of Labor investigates firing of journalist
- A journalist at the Killeen Daily Herald in Texas was fired when she complained to management the office was infested with fleas, leaving them with bug bites.
- OSHA found the company violated federal laws that protect workers who report workplace safety and health issues.
- The U.S. Department of Labor has filed suit against the paper, owned by Frank Mayborn Enterprises Inc.
- Her lawyers asked the court to order the newspaper “to comply with the federal anti-retaliation provisions; reinstate and pay the employee back wages, interest, compensatory and punitive damages; expunge the employee’s personnel record; and other remedies.”
OSHA Amazon investigation could expand
- OSHA has investigated warehouses across the U.S., including New York, Illinois, Idaho, Colorado, and Florida.
- The probes are focused on Amazon’s record-keeping regarding injury and illness to workers, as well as its ergonomics program and powered industrial truck operations.
- Workers at an Allentown, Pa., facility complained about temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, which prompted two OSHA inspections.
- Workers walked out of Amazon’s largest air freight facility on the West Coast demanding protection from high temperatures inside the warehouse.
Roofing firm faces $1.3M in penalties
- ALJ Home Improvement Inc., a roofing and siding contractor in Nanuet N.Y., faces $1.3 million in penalties.
- The proposed fines stem from an OSHA investigation after an employee suffered a fatal fall for the second time in three years.
- In the latest incident, a worker fell from the roof of a three-story residential construction project in Spring Valley.
- Another employee died in a fall at a Kiamesha Lake site and OSHA determined that ALJ failed to provide fall protection training or ensure effective fall protection safeguards were used.
