Swiss airline provider faces scrutiny for safety

  • There is a clamor for more worker safety inspections, safer conditions, and higher wages for service provider Swissport International AG at several U.S airports.
  • OSHA enforcement records show Swissport facilities at six U.S airports were inspected for safety hazards based on worker complaints in the past month.

Roofer killed by lightning

  • OSHA was on the scene after a roofer died from being struck by lightning in Deltona, Florida.
  • Edvin Velasquez Cinto, 24, was struck by lightning while building a roof along Sterling Pointe Drive just before 2 p.m.
  • Coworkers who were on the roof with Cinto said he looked stunned and then fell through a hole in the roof.
  • Volusia County Deputies said that when they found Cinto, he smelled like burnt hair and his sock was melted to his foot.

OSHA asked for more heat-prevention measures

  • Excessive heat exposure leads to as many as 2,000 worker deaths annually, according to a report by th consumer advocacy nonprofit Public Citizen.
  • Almost half of those deaths happen on a worker’s first day on the job, according to federal statistics.
  • The number of injuries could be slashed by about a third if OSHA sets a stringent heat standard to protect workers, the Public Citizen report found.
  • Heat is expensive both in terms of lost lives and lost time, as well. The cost of heat-related injuries is nearly $100 billion annually.

OSHA offering training grants

  • OSHA has $12.7 million available in Susan Harwood Training Grants.
  • The annual program is designed to fund in-person safety and health training for workers and employers in industries with high injury, illness, and fatality rates; underserved youth; workers with limited English proficiency; and small businesses.
  • OSHA has made funding available for educational programs that identify and prevent workplace hazards. Applicants must conduct training on OSHA-designated workplace safety and health hazards.
  • Funds are also available for the development of quality classroom-ready training and educational materials that identify and prevent workplace hazards.
