Phoenix airline workers file heat complaint to OSHA

• Employees of Phoenix Sky Harbor filed an OSHA complaint against aviation support services provider Prospect Airport Services for allegedly not ensuring basic worker protections amid Phoenix’s record-high temperatures.
• The workers are being supported by Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Anasari and they held signs and photos outside a terminal highlighting Arizona’s extreme heat.
• One cabin cleaner said she was recently hospitalized because of the extreme heat.
• Phoenix workers are also demanding that Congress pass the “Good Jobs for Good Airports Act,” which includes higher pay and benefits.

Auto services company faces fines for hazards

• Take 5 Car Wash in Beachwood, Ohio, ignored reports of employees suffering electrical shocks for more than 14 months.
• OSHA opened an inspection of the car wash and learned that employees were assigned to clean the walls of the facility with high-pressure water near electrical equipment, including a 480-volt electrical panel not rated for wet or damp locations and showing signs of deterioration.
• OSHA cited Driven Brands Shared Services LLC for one willful and 12 serious safety and health violations.
• The agency proposed $256,707 in penalties.

Investigation after worker dies at Tennessee Valley Authority 

• A man died after an accident at a Tennessee Valley Authority plant.
• The worker, Matt McPherson suffered a serious injury while performing maintenance at the Brownsville Combustion Turbine Plane and was flown to a hospital in Memphis where he later died.
• McPherson’s daughter said he was attempting to ventilate a faulty natural gas pipe when it burst, causing serious injuries to his head and crushing his left arm. McPherson was

Dangers continue for agriculture, meat industries

• The meat and poultry industry is one of the most dangerous industries and the agricultural sector is incredibly dangerous overall, according to the DC-based nonprofit Sustainable Earth Eating.
• From 2015 to 2020, there were 573 fatalities in the sector and 62,079 agricultural workers were treated in emergency rooms for nonfatal injuries related to their jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
• Undocumented workers who work in the industry may avoid reporting hazardous conditions over fears they could lose their jobs or be deported, according to the Economic Policy Institute which uses data from OSHA.
• The nonprofit listed a number of reasons for this high injury rate in a news release, including how meat factories work 24/7 shifts.
